Background Check companies can run prior address checks to obtain information without asking applicants to provide the information.

Employment Background Checks and Tenant Background Checks include criminal record reports on applicants. Nationwide, state and countywide background checks are all available through AAA Credit Screening but running county criminal record checks are the most valuable. Part of the reason why county criminal records are so important vs. just running state or nationwide reports is that some counties may not report to the state or the national databases.

County criminal records provide the most accurate and up to date information on an applicant's criminal history. Getting applicants to provide addresses for the past 7 years gives screening companies a starting point on counties to run criminal record checks in, however, some applicants can omit addresses in counties/states, etc. that they have committed crimes in, to try to pass a background check. Running address checks provides us with the information needed to obtain more complete reports. Not only will it provide criminal conviction information, but it will also tell the hiring manager or landlord whether or not this is a trustworthy person and if they have lied about their past.

Credit reports also provide some previous address information which can be compared to the application form to help confirm addresses, but those are only when used to apply for credit. The address checks pull information from hundreds of sources including the US Postal Service, utility records, creditors, voter registration and others. These reports are then compared to known information on the applicant to determine accuracy and can then be used to run county criminal background checks.
