Employment Background Checks - WARNING Signs
What Hiring Managers need to look for.
What Hiring Managers need to look for during a Employment Background Check
Background Checks are an important part of any Employment Background Check process, but it is not enough to just look at a criminal record, there are other factors that can contribute greatly to a hiring manager making the best, most informed decisions:
1. Resume Inconsistencies
When reading a candidate's resume, it is important to look for inconsistencies. A comprehensive background check will include critical information to compare with the resume to spot inconsistencies such as falsified education credentials, dates of employment at previous companies, etc. Inconsistencies can indicate that a candidate may have something to hide. Any inconsistencies should be discussed with the applicant giving them the chance to explain those issues.
2. Criminal Records
Criminal Records are the largest, most important part of employment screening and can provide insight into the candidate's character and help employers avoid confrontations and workplace violence. If an employer asked about a criminal history and the employee did not disclose any arrest records, it would be considered a red flag any arrests show up on the criminal record search.
3. Credit History
Employment Credit reports are not for all employees or positions, but it is especially helpful when a candidate is considered for a financial position such as any accounting function, or one dealing with company money. An employee with good credit shows financial responsibility and would be a positive factor when considering an employee for such a position.
4. Reference Checks
Reference checks are an important part of the employment screening process. Talking to previous employers, co-workers and even friends can provide a hiring manager with insight into the applicant's character and how they would fit into their corporate culture. AAACSS provides employment reference checks wherein our staff will call your applicant's references to see what they have to say about your candidate.
5. Prior Address Check
Running a prior address check on an applicant is a good way of finding out where in the country an employee has lived. This information would then indicate which counties and states criminal record checks should be run on. Some candidates move to new states and won't mention that they have lived in others to try and avoid their criminal record showing up during the screening process.
6. Education & Credential Verification
Degree Verification and Credential verification provides evidence that a candidate has completed the degrees or certifications that they have claimed on their resumes. Unfortunately, candidates often embellish their education and certification credentials knowing that only 25% of employers run background checks.
7. Driving Records
An Employee Driving Record Check is a useful tool when considering a candidate, especially if you plan to allow them behind the wheel of a company vehicle, but it can also be a useful tool to determine whether the candidate is a responsible person. Accidents, multiple tickets, and failure to pay tickets, etc. can be an indication of an irresponsible person which could reflect their work ethic.
These are just some indicators that employers should look at when considering a candidate for employment. If you have any questions or need help deciphering your report, please feel free to contact our knowledgeable staff and they would be happy to assist you.
